  1. Really is very important the use of the literature in the teaching English. This text is very good because present some activities that can contribute to the learning of the student, primarily, because in general, the literature possibility a rich and pleasure learning. However, according to the author, is need that the teacher “(...) prepare activities which will provoke interaction between the students and the literary text, and between the students themselves.(...)” For exemple: The teacher can present a poem through of slides with pictures and song, because the song relax and concentrate the student.

  2. Literature in the ESL classroom by Sandra Mckay shows pros and cons arguments about literature been part of curriculum designer. It is a great text to make clear the real importance of literature as a tool to develop learning language process. Mckay points out three commom arguments against using literature in an ESL classroom. The first one is related to literature structural complexity and its unique use of language, the second is that it does not contribute or help the students' academic and/or occupational goals, and the third is linked to the idea that the particular culture perspective reflected by literature may be difficult to studnts understand.

  3. The main point is that as Mckay states, literature has been used in order to improve the usage of language and not the use fo it.
If literature was used in a right perspective, according to the author, aiming to develop students' motivation, cultural tolerance, awareness of language, interaction both reader and text and between readers discourse of it, interpretation and refletion so, literature can offer several benefits to ESL classes.

  4. In my point of view and sustained by my own experiense in this kind of classes, it all depends on the teacher way of using the literary materials he/she has choosen to work according to his/her class characteristics. At this point, what really has attracted my attention and i definitly agree to is the part of the text where Mckay states that "The key to success is using literature in the ESL clss seems to me to rest in the literary works that are selcted." In the other hand, I also have to say that, it does not matter if the literary work is an amazing one if the teacher does not know how to use it aiming to develop students growth not only grammatical but socially speaking.

  5. After choosing the text a good activity should be concerned with three stages: pre, while and post. Each one will give the opportunity to teachers check students familiality to the literature choosen and this will decrease their affective filter. On pre-activity we could use the title of the text to students make predictions about the story then a sequence order of pictures on the board to help then. On while-activity they supposed to select the right piece of the story given (the story should be tired in parts first) and relate them to each picture on the board. On post-activity the students would read the whole story and discuss about it.

  6. The literature in the classroom is of great importance to student learning. For literary texts, the teacher have many opportunities to sharpen the student's interest in learning the English language. Rosamaria Reo Pereira highlights the importance of literary texts in teaching. "Literature can or will always provoke thought, reflection, associations, and many other responses in students"(p.44), and learning of languages shows that the teacher should implement various activities with their students in the classroom. So it shows that the teacher should apply these literary texts in the classroom with jobs that have pre-activities, while reading and post-activities, which shows the great importance that teachers have in implementing the tasks he should seek activities that call students' attention because the literary texts offer a rich source of linguistic input and can help learners to practice the four skills - speaking, listening, reading and writing - in addition to exemplifying grammatical structures and presenting new vocabulary. Literature can also help learners to develop their understanding of other cultures, awareness of ‘difference' and to develop tolerance and understanding.

  7. Pratical exemple:
The teacher writes in the board the title of a poem. With classroom divided into three groups, he shows pictures or photos that represent the order that the poem was written, and through tips he makes the students realize the beginning of the poem.
Soon after the teacher asks students to read the poem and write an end to poem.
After collecting the poems, to read the end of each group gave the poem.
Read the final truth and compare which group was closer to the real story.

  8. There is no doubt that the text “The role literature can play in teaching english” is an excellent text because it provokes good discussions in relation to the teaching of English through Literature. Besides, it talks about the importance of the literature in the teaching-learning process as an opportunity of growth once it can helps students “get in contact with others experiences” (p.44) and thereby construct their own knowledge. Therefore, it presents many suggestions of how to work literature in the English classes.
We know the literature is a great teaching strategy that the teacher can use in order to motivate and stimulate the language learners. And regarding it this there is a part of the text that in my opinion is so relevant because says that “teachers who like to read and enjoy literature should have in mind that literature is one of the tools to help EFL students to improve their abilities in English. The student is an active agent, not a passive one.”(p.47) From this perspective, the students can use literature for expressing their feelings and opinions and this way interact with each other using any ability of communication.
In order to motivate the language learners through literature the teachers can use different strategies of teaching. These strategies can be used to develop some type of student’s skill as reading, text interpretation, associations or reflections and many others. And as the text says if they cause interaction between all the students they can also “make the students fall in love with the literature”. (p.47)
Here we are going to point out an activity that could be used for this. It consists in three steps that are: pre-activity, while activity and pos – activity. As pre - activity the teacher could select a literary text and determine one important point that is presents in it and makes some questions that require the students answer using their own lives experiences. Then, for the while – activity, he/she could give specific questions related to the profiles characters to the students in order for them answering during the reading text. In the post – activity the teacher could ask the students makes the relations between the characters profiles and theirs.

  9. The text show that, the use of literature in classroom possibility an excellent teaching English language, because read always provokes the the thought and reflections. The reflactions can be your experience, knowledge of the world or the other culture as confirmed by the text " (...)in many pieces of the literature, the meaning can be interprete differently by each student or reader, and by the same one at various moments in his/her life.this is an opportunity of growth." (p.44)
It is very important to students the SL, the literature possibility the evolution of the studant in many aspects with: reading, writing, speak, interpret and give your opinion.
The teaching literature change of relation of text for that the fell students, but the teacher have that know as use literary text with approaches that will motivate the students. the use of pre-readind, wile-reading and post-reading activities could facilitate the interaction teaching and learning. One suggestion that envolve these three activities would be: the teacher separetes the classroom in three gorups and show a title of one story for each group write about the title. After, the groups would read their creations and in the end the groups would speak their opinions about the creations of other goroups.

  10. Literature is an important vehicle that identifies, explains, and shows the culture of a specific society and/or country. According to Pereira literary texts can provoke thought, reflection or association in the students, but this type of knowledge can be understood or interpreted with different viewpoints because each student has a distinct personality, personal experiences, vision of world, position about political system, society, religion, and others. This own viewpoint facilitates on development of linguistic abilities of pupils.

    ReplyDelete
  11. A interesting example of activity with literary texts can be divided in three stages based on Pereira’s research:

1 – It is possible to use pictures or songs related with story, fable, poetry or other type of literary production, this activity facilitates the comprehension because it uses different sensory stimuli like: auditory, verbal, visual, etc. In this stage the students can be thinking about the relation between picture and/or song and literary text used in the activity.

2 – The teacher can divide the students in groups formed by four of five pupils where they will discuss about the answer of the questions proposed by teacher.

3 – The students will be able to rewrite the ending, this activity will transform the activity in a enjoyable lesson. When the activity was finished the teacher can give them the full literary text used during the class.

In my opinion is essential the teacher uses his/her creativity and the teacher should give freedom at the students before, during and after of activity because when students don' feel them obliged to do something, they realize calmy and perfectly what the teacher proposes to them.

  12. The literature can play the teaching English, because when the teacher applies reading in class using literary texts it helps the students improve their skills when studying English, but to it the teacher must knows stimulate the students through strategies activities that let they express their opinion or feelings. The teacher must be as main goal the choose adequate approaches and strategies that can facilitate student’s understanding of the literary texts devising materials and tasks which help them to do this.
The author presents and suggests that the activities can have three major parts: pre-activities, while-activities and post-reading activities. These ideas about how to work with texts are fantastic, because the teacher can explore many aspects during the activities, for example, the development students’ interpretative abilities and also discussion, reflection and critical thinking.
According to Lazar the literature can be used with students because: It’s very motivating, it has general educational value, it helps students to understand another culture, it’s stimulus for language acquisition. I believe that these factors are very important to the development process second language acquisition and the literature can be used as tool to teaching- learning of English, and the teacher just needs to create activities which will provoke interaction between the literary text and students.
As activity the teacher could bring a short literary text and first he’d show some pictures about it, and the students would speculate about the subject, characteristics and genre of the text, then the teacher could identify the central genre of the story, also he’d talk about other genre as thriller, horror, romance etc, and he'd ask to students reading in group the text, after the students rewriting another story, but with the same information of first story, as space, characters, etc, exchanging only the genre.

  13. The text talks about the teaching of literature in English language classes, showing the richness of literary texts as a source of knowledge, debate and reflection. The text also talks about the strategies that can facilitate understanding of literary texts."reading a literary text requires a great amount of knowledge,of reflection,of interpretation of our onw personal and social life"
I believe the text is very interesting because the author discusses the use of literary texts, always prioritizing activities that encourage students, making the lessons interesting and fun
teachers can select texts as fairy tales and ask students to create a new ending and change the title of the text.

  14. The text writing by Sandra Mckay talks about an importance the “Literature in the ESL classroom” presenting arguments favorable or unfavorable for them use. As such, positive point is “literature can foster an overall increase in reading proficiency, it will contribute to these goals. An evaluation of reading proficiency rests on an understanding of what is involved in the reading process.” because the students acquisition vocabulary, for example.
Other negative point is the difficulty that some students have for understand the difficult language in this case “the study of literature will contribute nothing to helping our students meet their academic and/or occupational goal.”
I think that is very important literature be part of a curriculum for English as Second Language provided there is interaction between learner/author through text but for have good results, the teacher is responsible for selection materials for classroom “Selecting the text is only the first step” (Mckay).
My suggest for classroom activity to select movies based in literature to encourage reading the students will can make full read the book.

  15. Literature is a good instrument of learning if the teacher used it correctly. Teachers who learn having literature as a way for it can break paradigms since learning is considered something boring by some people. Different from math, physics, story or others subjects the moment of literature is the moment where the student can express his feelings, opinions, personal emotions and develops his ability to interpret and, of course, others important aspects dependent of the type of activity and the time to work it.
A good proposes of activity in the classroom with literary material may be to use images for help in reading activities where the teacher in Pre-reading moment put a music and start to reading, in while-reading moment the teacher give students specifics questions about the subject shown. And in the end the post-reading moment the teacher making a pause for explore the picture and ask to students their interpretation of the image related to the text read. These kinds of activity for example allow literature class makes the reading more enjoyable.

  18. In the text "The role literature can play in teaching english" Pereira proposes some strategies for it to be used by teachers in their classes with goal of to become it more interesting and facilite the students' understanding about the literary text. Before this, however, the authoress talks about the advantages of to work with literary text in the classes of teaching language. According to Pereira "Literature can or will always provoke thought, refelection, associations, and many others responses in students". I agree with her because besides to be a vast and rich material that aims in the learning language, the literature stimulates the students' perception as critical human able to interact socially, respect and know different cultures "it is an opportunity of growfh". Considering the exposed above and the understanding of the text, the teachers' role in the teaching language would be to help the students to express their feelings and opnion and it doesn't analyse the text only.
My suggestion for acttivities in classroom is to know a literary text of one famous author and from this to stimulate a communicative interact between the students. I was thinking about the students' difficulty in comprehend the words' meaning , I propose a vocabulary exercise during the pré-reading. This exercise can be done in the form of word-search. This strategy is interesting in my opinion because the search by words in dictionary can seem more enjoyable and different and it doesn't seem boring and monotonous.

  19. Well, this text really to show as the Literature should be worked in the class in a creative and interesting way.According to the text:(...)"In many pieces of Literature , the meaning can be interpreted differently by each student or reader, and by the same on at various moments in his/her life. This is an opportunity of growth. It is given to the student, through tha classes much more interesting because they stimulate students to express their own opnion or feelings."(...)
In practice: The teacher to show a picture to the class, then he does ask questions about it. The students should answer according the picture;the students will write own version of the story and then, the teacher will show the original text and comment about their opinions.

  20. The text speaks of how literature can become interesting for students. And depending on the place of the social context of literary texts can be interpreted in several ways.
The text also suggestions of how teachers can stimulate student in literature classes. The teacher has a big role in class since he will explore the vocabulary knowledge and world knowledge to the students, and before that the teacher is exposed to many different reactions of the students used the text because the style can cause students to dislike.
The techniques used in the text can help stimulate the students. In our classes were some of these techniques were used. For example, at the beginning of the class was placed an image of a frightened man where students were encouraged to make assumptions about that image, and the group had the opportunity to put into practice our vision about where the text at the end of this interaction group have done speculations to an end of history.
And putting into practice these activities proposed by the text, we believe that literature can bring knowledge reflection and students' interest in literature classes, just to stimulate the teaching / learning differentiated.

  21. This text is very interesting , because shows ways to the teacher work the literary text in the classroom for facility the understanding of the students, Besides , according by LAZR (1993), our main aim when using literature with our students is to help them unravel the many meanings in a text, and when the author suggest the activities and divide in three parts this fact facilitates the student`s understanding .
For example, for understand a complex literary text is more easy follow the suggestion of the author, first the pre-activities (with the pre-teaching vocabulary, making, predictions about the story), after the while-activities (with the teacher will help students understand the plot, the characters, difficult vocabulary, the style, the language and theme), and after the post-reading (with activities the teacher will help students make interpretations of the text.
This form the text will be better understood and the student will have more success in them reading .

    Literature in the ESL classroom
The Sandra Mckay‘s text is about if the use of the literature for English a second Language. The question is the follow: Should literature be part of a curriculum for English as a second Language. According many author that McKay to mention like: Widdowson, Fassler, Lay and others, The main goof the as ESL teachers is to teach the grammar of the language .However the literary’s text had a burden culture in this way it will difficulty the development of the student, Therefore the literature will contribute nothing to helping our student meet their academic and /or occupational goals.
The text presents too, the arguments in favor of the use the literature for ESL, the text say that literature encourage of the tolerance, the respect with the interpretation of the each student, besides the text literary to stimulate the creativity of the theirs. That’s enough that teachers select the right material for each class and they need to apply the activity of right form.
I think the part of the text very important is the follow: “….Finally, an examination of a foreign culture through literature may increase their understanding of that culture and perhaps spur their own imaginative writing.” I agree whit McKay. I think the text literary can developing linguistic knowledge, to improve the reading, to improve the write, to stimulate the creative, and it can too to improve the pronunciation this depend that type of the activity proposal. For this I agree with the literature should be part of a curriculum for ESL.

Text: The Role Literature can play in teaching English
I really liked this text because I could realize Literature is very important to teaching English, it can stimulates students' thought and points of view; It gives to them the opportunity to increase their knowledge and improve their language, too; and it gives the students the possibity to interprete with the way they feel it.
But the Literature teaching can't be taught somehow or order. The Teacher has to select the right materials,to use the adequate approaches and strategies, in order to facilitate students' understanding.
The suggested activities are greats and helped me to understand how I can creat a Literature class step by step. It gave me a lot of ideas to do it in different ways.

  24. (BY MARTA LIMA) Through the reading of the text Role Literature Can Play in Teaching English, for me became easier teaching literature in the ESL classroom to develop activities in class room which involve the literature in a pleasant way that can get the students’ attention. This is an opportunity of growth, improving the knowledge The proposal of working a subject that is not well accepts for most of the teachers of foreign language and also for the students. But if be observed the such rules as following the three steps - pre-reading, while – reading and past-reading. So using adequate approaches and strategies that can facilitate students’ understanding of the literary text.

  25. Literature is one of those things where you love or hate! In my view the majority of students tend to hate, to join this lack of interest in reading and have the ingredients to reject it. How to change it? The text “The Role Literature Can Play in Teaching English” brings a reflection on how to use the best strategies for motivating students and minimize rejection it. I think it is important that LAZR ( 1993,P.03) SAYS: "we need to devise materials and tasks which them to help this" but it is difficult to find good learning materials literary text, so we have little information to develop our own material. But the author of this text shows us a very practical step by step to produce good materials. She divided the construction activity in three parts: Pre, While and Post reading, apparently a simple tip, but when put into practice becomes highly effective.

  26. (BY TILSANHE LIMA) The texts writing by Rosamaria Pereira talk about some strategies that can facilitate the use of the literature in the classroom.
The use literature in the classroom requires care from preparation to implementation of the activity, considering the individual skills of the class, and the channels of learning are numerous and differentiated. This however, does not select who likes and who does not like literature.
Believe is necessary to propose. Believe that literary text can put students in contact with new experiences and help them develop their knowledge and ability to understand and/ or production.
According MICHEETTI (2000), “Reading literary texts help students get in may contact with other experiences, with their own experiences learn, exchange experience, and broaden thus their knowledge of themselves and of the world.”
For this there is the need for choice of methods and strategies to ensure the efficiency o the proposed activity, noting the language and context of the piece being worked, because the ability of understanding may well be influenced by the linguistic style and form that the author uses to show the idea in the text.
MICHELTTI (2000) affirms that “reading is a lonely action which depends on the reader’s will and his/her ability to understand the discourse of the other.”
Such are differently from what is thought by many teachers do not limit the possibilities of using literature in foreign language classes, as in activities involving literature.
Thus the literary texts may have characteristics that make them excellent “tools” to study and development of classes.

  27. The text is very interesting because it says that the teaching of English through literature encourages students to develop the skill and interpretation. Literary texts help us to express feelings and make reflections on life.
So, the lessons become more interesting when we use literary texts, because we provide contact with other cultures and exchange of experiencias.Os students associate their knowledge with the world of experiences available in the literature.

  28. PRACTICAL EXAMPLE:
    THEME: LIE
Pre- It is showed pictures about Pinocchio, after the teacher speaks if it is familiar or unfamiliar for them and other information more, then some questions are done about lies.
While- A summary of the story is given to students then they talk about the lies that made pinocchio.
Post- Students write three sentences about themselves, one of the sentences is false, then his colleagues try to guess which one is fake.
